Greetings
and Well Met! I am Christine Dempsey, your costume designer, seamstress
and webmistress. I have been sewing, designing, and wearing my own creations
since I was 12 and studying historical costuming for almost as long. I
started designing in high school while taking a 3 year art sequence in
Fashion Design (the only class I never cut). There I learned the art of
draping on a mannequin and started creating my own patterns for anything
I wanted. It was then that I started dreaming of owning my own design
company with a "Renaissance/Gothic" theme. |
||
I
attended the Fashion Institute of Technology for 2 years where I refined
my existing skills and added industry specific skills to my knowledge
base. I design, draft and grade (resize) all of my own patterns by hand.
After attending my first Renaissance Faire, I started my research and
creation of historical costuming. Shortly after that, my designs and clothing
became highly sought after among my friends, who actually started paying
me to sew for them ;)~ |
||
In
February of 1999, I decided that it was time to start my own business
or work for someone else forever (blah!!!). So, I went about the business
of getting myself fired from my full time job of running someone else's
company, so that I could start my own. And, what an adventure it has been
since!!! |
||
I
have also designed this entire website myself in straight HTML code and
design most of the graphics as well. I have taken classes in web design
and publishing, and I am always researching and educating myself in subjects
that interest me. I am insanely self-taught and feel that hands-on experience
is the best way to learn and master anything. Get your heads out of the
textbooks and go out and experience life a little! |
||
That
said, welcome to Crimson Gypsy Designs! Thank you to all of my wonderful
customers who have made this business (ad)venture so successful! And thank
you to my family who tolerates my long hours sewing and sitting in front
of my computer, and talking about my business and clothing all the time. |
||
I
really hope that you enjoy the fruits of my labour. I love running my
own business. The work is sometimes hard, and the hours long. But my clients
have made it all worthwhile. I love seeing my designs and creations on
people, and if you purchase my clothing, I would love a photo of you wearing
it! |
||
Here
is some personal information about me. |
||
I
have very diversified interests, which is why running my own company is
so much fun. I am a computer junkie. My friend Joe says I have "OCCD",
otherwise known as Obsessive-Compulsive Computer Disorder, because in
my spare time, I can be found in front of my computer tweaking my website
or surfing the internet for new ideas and inspiration. If you have a historical
clothing website out there, chances are I have seen it. |
||
I
am married to a most wonderful man, Ed, who is a tattoo artist. We have
a beautiful son, Duncan. |
||
I
also perform and teach Belly
Dance in my spare time, am into tattoos, mermaids, mehndi (the Indian
art of Henna), historical costuming and re-enactment (of course), fantasy
role-playing and sword-fighting. I also make my own MEAD!!!
Ah, you will never know the pleasures of making your own mead unless you
do it yourself... I belong to a small, close knit guild of brewers who
call ourselves, "The Keepers of the Bee". See my links
page for many interesting links to these and other subjects. |
||
My
husband and I attend Pennsic
War (see also Alexander the Lost's
Pennsic War Page) every year in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania. If you
have never been to Pennsic War, you MUST attend. It is the ultimate in
period living for two weeks - camping, living outdoors, cooking over an
open fire, more historical merchants than you can imagine, parties, drinking
MEAD and live drumming and BELLY DANCING!!! You can almost forget that
the mundane world exists! Of course, there's always the actual war and
battles, too. We camp with the Aerie
of Tir Thalor, a mercenary army. More information about them can be
found at Endhome.com. Here is a
photo of
most of our encampment from Pennsic XXVII. I'm the sexy redhead in on
the ground in the front ;)~ |
||
Well,
I guess that is it for now. I don't really know what else to say about
myself, without getting into more boring details. I hope that you have
enjoyed my (not so) brief bio. If you are interested in more information
about me or Crimson Gypsy Designs, please don't hesitate to e-mail
me! |
